The Dark Side of Birding – Presentation by Ralph “Doc” Olsen

Cedar Lakes Conservation Foundation hosted a presentation on “The Dark Side of Birding” by Ralph ‘Doc’ Olsen on November 13, 2018 at the West Bend Country Club.

Long-time CLCF member Mary Emory introduced Doc, a passionate birder and retired Colonel in the U.S. Army who served 34 years in the Army and National Guard. Doc was awarded the Paratrooper Badge and the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He is a retired pediatrician on the Honorary Staff of Children’s Hospital.

Doc gave this presentation on the life of British Colonel Richard Meinerzhagen to a bird-watching group at Horicon Marsh a few years ago, and we were glad to have him share it with us as well.

The practice of birding has changed greatly since the early 20th Century when “collecting” birds was done with a shotgun, not a pair of binoculars. Thankfully, we have come a long way in understanding the importance of living in balance with Nature and the other inhabitants of this precious planet.
